Series creator Nick Antosca provided Lewis with a detailed backstory for Crystal, including the shocking revelation in the Season 1 finale, "The Executioners." It was unveiled that Crystal, having escaped a mental institution, was responsible for Melissa's murder and the subsequent theft of the baby, whom she raised as her own.
Lewis, who collaborated with Antosca previously, was informed of Crystal's true nature from the outset. She intentionally withheld telegraphing the character's savagery, aiming to craft a truly unsettling psychopath and inviting comparison between Crystal and Max Cady's disturbed psyches.
Despite Max Cady's actions in the finale, shooting Crystal and her son Luke and leaving them for dead, Lewis hinted at possibilities for a second season, citing Antosca's penchant for unexpected twists. Her reunion with Martin Scorsese, an executive producer on the series, is described as deeply meaningful, recalling his early mentorship.
