Julia Cumming, the frontwoman of the New York rock trio Sunflower Bean, has officially embarked on a solo journey. Her debut solo album, titled "Julia," is scheduled for release on April 24. To mark this new chapter, Cumming has released a single, "My Life," which she described as the culmination of writing through the pandemic and touring pressures, leading to a profound sense of liberation.
The single "My Life" is a smooth, Seventies-inspired pop ballad. Its lyrics emphasize self-definition, asserting independence from external validation. The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Edgar Wright, who also cast Cumming in a role in his upcoming film 'The Running Man.'
Cumming, who co-founded Sunflower Bean in the 2010s, recorded her solo album with producer Chris Coady and collaborator Brian Robert Jones. The album features contributions from notable musicians like Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Cumming's goal for "Julia" is to create a fun, anti-cool record that serves as a sanctuary for those who, like her, felt like misfits growing up.
Additionally, Cumming has announced her first solo tour dates, with performances planned for spring in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris.
