Paris's oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, has been transformed by French street artist JR into "The Cave of Pont Neuf," an immersive art installation that creates the illusion of a craggy mountain range. This exhibition, running through June 28, invites visitors to walk through an "augmented reality" experience within an inflatable structure. JR, a self-proclaimed disciple of Christo, employed air inflation to construct the artwork, a method inspired by Christo's own experiments with inflatable models and his nephew Vladimir Yavachev's guidance.
The project serves as a tribute to Christo, who pioneered large-scale public art spectacles. Yavachev, who worked with Christo and Jeanne-Claude, steered the project to JR as part of a series commemorating Christo's major works. Unlike Christo's often lengthy approval processes, JR found public art displays are now viewed favorably for tourism and publicity. The installation is financed through JR's art sales and corporate sponsorships, including Salesforce and Bloomberg Connects, with Snap developing the augmented reality component. Thomas Bangalter contributed to the soundtrack, and a unique scent was created to evoke a cavern atmosphere.
