For over a decade, Josh Sundquist has continued his tradition of crafting inventive, adaptive Halloween costumes. This year, he exclusively revealed his inspiration: Forky from the popular Toy Story film series. Sundquist's wife and their three-year-old son are joining him, dressed as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively, celebrating their first Halloween in their new Florida home.
Sundquist, a motivational speaker and author, lost his leg to cancer at age nine. As an adult, he began creating costumes tailored to his disability, gaining viral attention in 2012 for a "leg lamp" costume. His creations consistently emphasize visual elements that would be challenging for a two-legged person to wear.
This year's Forky costume involved significant design challenges, particularly in scaling the head and integrating Sundquist's crutches. He worked with costume maker Calen Hoffman, using a mannequin matching his exact proportions. Sundquist aims for his costumes to positively impact perceptions of amputees and empower children with disabilities, actively promoting adaptive costume creativity.
