The biggest surprise came with his costume, as the standard Pugsley shirt was unavailable. Peck's mother brilliantly improvised, purchasing a referee shirt from a Foot Locker employee. She ingeniously altered it, cutting and re-stitching the stripes to achieve the desired horizontal pattern, securing it to a t-shirt with safety clips.

With the jacket on, the makeshift costume was indistinguishable from the original. Peck humorously recalled his mother's show tune singing during the costume crisis. This creative solution ensured Peck's iconic look for his televised performance, highlighting his mother's quick thinking and dedication.
