Jordanian filmmakers Raghad Albakheet and Danial Salman are embarking on new individual projects following the international success of their short film, "A Subconscious Dive." The film garnered recognition as a semifinalist in the Student Academy Awards' Alternative/Experimental category, becoming only the second Jordanian film in history to achieve this distinction. This accomplishment signifies a notable advancement for Jordan's burgeoning film industry.
Albakheet directed the visually compelling short, which uses hypnotherapy to explore her memories and emotions, descending into her subconscious. The film navigates personal pain through evocative and sometimes unsettling imagery. Albakheet emphasized the film's strength lies in its honest portrayal of uncomfortable emotions, noting that her experiences as a woman shaped the narrative, yet its universal themes of vulnerability resonate globally.
Producer Danial Salman described the experience as demanding yet rewarding, focusing on enabling Albakheet's artistic vision within practical constraints. The production, a student endeavor, was achieved with a budget of $4,231. Filming presented challenges, including underwater sequences in Aqaba, requiring Albakheet to obtain scuba diving certification. The Al Azraq Wetland Reserve was also a key filming location, with invaluable collaboration from the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature.
"A Subconscious Dive" has served as a pivotal launchpad for both filmmakers. Albakheet, leveraging her fine arts background, validated her non-linear storytelling approach and is now developing her debut feature, "Ice Cream Truck," a narrative continuation of her previous work. Salman, also primarily a writer and director, is currently promoting his short film "Acceptance" and developing two new projects: a short film titled "What Remains," exploring honor killings, and his first feature, "The Memory of You," inspired by his family's inheritance conflicts and Alzheimer's.
The success of "A Subconscious Dive" is particularly meaningful for Salman, as it follows Murad Abu Eisheh's "Tala'vision" as the second Jordanian film to receive Student Academy Award recognition. This achievement highlights the potential of projects developed through the Jordan Cinema Academy, proudly representing Jordanian cinema on an international stage.
