Jordan's Royal Film Commission (RFC) is poised to sign a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the China Film Administration in Beijing. This agreement aims to foster deeper cooperation and collaboration within the film industry between the two nations. The RFC is actively participating in the Shanghai Film Festival, where two Jordanian films, "Boomah" and "Sink," are set to premiere, a first for the festival.
The RFC is also joining the Belt and Road Film Alliance, a network of 57 festivals and agencies from 50 countries, promoting cinematic exchange. Beyond a dedicated market booth, the commission is organizing events to showcase Jordan's film sector to international professionals. The signing of the MOU is considered strategically important for accessing the Chinese film industry.
Jordan has been cultivating ties with China's film industry over the past two years, including hosting Beijing Film Festival events and facilitating exploratory visits. These efforts aim to attract Chinese productions to Jordan and explore future co-productions, focusing on stories that blend both cultures. The campaign artwork for Jordan's Shanghai presence, featuring Petra and the Great Wall, highlights historical Silk Road connections.
Furthermore, Jordan is actively promoting itself as a filming destination, offering an enhanced 45% cash rebate and tax exemptions. The recent opening of Olivewood Film Studios in Amman provides state-of-the-art infrastructure. While recent geopolitical events have led to production cancellations, the RFC anticipates a resurgence of interest once the situation stabilizes, with a particular focus on expanding opportunities in Asian markets.
