Luxbox Acquires Early Films of Portuguese Director Rodrigues

Parisian sales company Luxbox has announced the acquisition of three early films by Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues. This acquisition launches Luxbox's third classic collection and follows their recent acquisition of the complete filmography of the late Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr.

The acquired films, 'Phantom' (2000), 'Two Drifters' (2005), and 'To Die Like a Man' (2009), are noted for their exploration of human desire, particularly queer experiences. Rodrigues' debut, 'Phantom,' follows a Lisbon trash collector. 'Two Drifters' tells the story of Rui searching for his lost lover, while 'To Die Like a Man' centers on a transgender woman's struggles.

These films, originally produced by Rosa Filmes, have been meticulously restored from their 35 mm camera negatives. The restoration efforts, including scanning and color correction, were a collaboration between Cineric Portugal and Irma Lucia Efeitos Especiais. Digital sound restoration was handled by Hugo Leitão.

The digitization and restoration process was overseen by Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema. This initiative is part of the FILMar project, supported by the European Financial Mechanism EEA Grants 2020-2024, ensuring the preservation of these significant cinematic works.
