John Cameron Mitchell, the celebrated Tony Award-winning actor, writer, and director, is slated to return to Broadway this winter in the critically acclaimed play "Oh, Mary!". Mitchell, widely recognized for his iconic role in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," will step into the shoes of Mary Todd Lincoln for a limited 12-week engagement, commencing February 3, 2026, and concluding April 26. This marks Mitchell's first appearance on the Broadway stage in a decade, following his previous run in the Tony-winning revival of "Hedwig."
The production of "Oh, Mary!" has achieved remarkable success since its opening on July 11, 2024, at the Lyceum Theatre. It swiftly became the first show in the venue's 121-year history to surpass $1 million in a single week's gross. The comedy has since broken its own box office record an impressive twelve times and was the first production of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its initial investment.
Mitchell joins an impressive cast that has previously inhabited the role of the distinctive Mary. Among them are original star and playwright Cole Escola, Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, Hannah Solow, and two-time "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner Jinkx Monsoon, who returns for an encore engagement on January 8. Director Sam Pinkleton expressed his enthusiasm for Mitchell's addition, calling it "delicious and somehow inevitable," acknowledging Mitchell's significant influence on contemporary performance art.
