Jodie Whittaker will star in and executive produce 'The Country,' a new dystopian short film by Ella Grace Kennedy. The project also features Eoin McCaul, Anna Popplewell, and Jake Kenny-Byrne.
'The Country' uses a role-reversed society to explore themes of bodily autonomy, oppression, and control. The narrative centers on a seventeen-year-old named Aaron, portrayed by McCaul, who struggles under the rigid laws governing the male body.
Whittaker expressed her enthusiasm, stating she was "completely blown away" by Kennedy's daring and unique script. Producer Charlotte Brownlee highlighted the film's provocative lens on urgent social issues.
Kennedy, who also writes and directs, aims to shift perspectives by placing men at the center, forcing audiences to confront dehumanizing realities that women often face. Kennedy is also developing a horror feature titled 'Home'.
