Neeta Lulla's Matte Magic: Jodhaa Akbar's Iconic Lehenga

The iconic red lehenga worn by Aishwarya Rai in the 2008 film 'Jodhaa Akbar' has transcended the screen to become a symbol of cinematic couture. Designer Neeta Lulla faced significant challenges in its creation, particularly the requirement for a matte finish due to natural light filming conditions. This meant avoiding any shimmer or shine on the regal bridal outfit.

To achieve the desired richness without shine, Lulla and her team constructed the lehenga on an organic cotton and mull base. It was meticulously hand-embroidered with kasab, resham, gota patti, kundan, and metal embellishments. Extensive research into Mughal and Rajput historical contexts informed the fabric and motif choices.

The entire design process, including fabric construction, embroidery, and ageing treatments, spanned over six months. This dedication to historical grounding and camera-ready detail resulted in a luxurious, camera-friendly look. The lehenga's enduring appeal is evident as it continues to inspire brides today and was featured in the Academy Museum's Colour in Motion exhibition in 2025.
