Joan Baez Questions Music Stars' Silence on Democracy

Joan Baez, a revered singer-songwriter with a long history of activism, has voiced her critique of many contemporary popular female artists for their silence on pressing political issues.

During a recent appearance, Baez discussed the widespread reluctance among artists to speak out against what she described as an assault on democracy. She contrasted this with her own career, spanning six decades, during which she has consistently used her platform for advocacy.

While Baez recognized that a few emerging artists are producing impactful work and expressing their views, she specifically mentioned Brandi Carlile and Maggie Rogers as positive examples. She noted Rogers' active participation at a recent rally against ICE.

However, Baez expressed bewilderment that many other successful young women in music, who have achieved significant wealth, appear unwilling to take even a small step to speak out on important societal matters. She questioned why these artists, with substantial platforms, hesitate to engage in advocacy.
