Jo Whiley has extended an apology to Fearne Cotton, regretting her lack of support during Cotton's challenging period at BBC Radio 1. Whiley admitted on a podcast that she was "oblivious" to the extent of Cotton's struggles.
Cotton, who hosted shows at the station between 2008 and 2015, had previously spoken about enduring an "excruciating time" due to intense shame following the 2013 conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Ian Watkins, for child sex offenses. She recalled feeling ostracized by colleagues, describing experiences of being "glared at, stared at and ignored."
Cotton emphasized that there was "no space to talk about it" during her time on air, compounding her difficulties. She further elaborated in her book, "Likeable," about the "depression and heaviness" she felt, particularly when news related to Watkins was broadcast during her show.
Watkins, who died in prison last October while serving a 29-year sentence, was convicted in 2013. Fearne Cotton has since worked through these feelings in therapy, realizing the shame was not hers to carry.
Cotton departed Radio 1 in 2015 and later left Radio 2 in 2021 due to panic attacks, stemming from her past experiences and a stark realization of her mental state.
