A new French adult animated comedy, 'Jim Queen,' world-premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, blending humor with serious themes. The film's narrative revolves around a virus named Heterosis, which inexplicably transforms gay men in Paris into heterosexuals. This event shatters the world of the film's protagonist, Jim Parfait, a prominent queer influencer and leader within the "Gym Queens" community.
Jim embarks on a quest for a rumored cure, aided by Lucien, a closeted virgin character. The production further emphasizes its tribute to the queer community by featuring recognizable figures within it, such as singer Philippe Katerine and drag performer La Briochée. François Sagat, an icon in gay pornography, lends his voice to the antagonist, Pavel.
Directed by Nicolas Athané and Marco Nguyen in their feature debut, the film's script was co-written with Simon Balteaux and Brice Chevillard. Producers David Alric and Arthur Delabays of Bobbypills aimed for authenticity, with Nguyen stating it was crucial for actors to be part of the community to genuinely understand and embody their characters. Sagat's casting as Jim's rival was particularly noteworthy, with the directors acknowledging his iconic status and his willingness to play a self-deprecating caricature of himself.
