Jia Zhangke Explores AI's Role in Filmmaking

Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke has completed shooting his latest short film in Italy, marking his first experience filming in the country. He described the process as similar to shooting in Beijing or Shanxi, embracing the location without feeling like an outsider.

Zhangke, known for adopting new technologies, has explored generative AI in filmmaking, producing two to three AI-short films. He intends to create more to better judge AI's capabilities, noting that AI has generated dialogue using his own voice. He advises against immediate rejection of new technologies, comparing AI's emergence to the transition to digital cinematography.

He cautioned against a rush to judgment regarding AI in film, emphasizing the importance of understanding its pros and cons. Zhangke believes issues can be resolved through legislation and other methods, promoting a respectful approach to emerging innovations.

During a masterclass, Jia also shared insights into his collaborative process, particularly with cinematographer Yu Lik-wai, and offered practical advice for a lasting filmmaking career. He stressed the importance of physical condition and dedicated scripting time, starting his day at 6 a.m. for creative work.
