More than a decade after their initial recording sessions, Adam Wiltzie has completed "Friendship Survival Guide," a final collaboration with his late friend, composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. The album, set for release on September 18, is compiled from recordings made between 2013 and 2017.
Originally conceived alongside their film score work for "The Theory of Everything" and "Arrival," the project was set aside as Jóhannsson's film career flourished. Following his unexpected passing in 2018, Wiltzie, with the support of Jóhannsson's family, resurrected the tapes to finish the album.
The resulting work honors their friendship, incorporating original analog tape loops alongside new recordings between 2023 and 2025. Electronic visionary Tim Hecker and composer Bryan Senti contributed to these later sessions. Notably, the album also includes some of the last recordings made by producer and engineer Steve Albini.
The album's title and track names reflect the deep personal connection and shared memories between Wiltzie and Jóhannsson, who first met in Prague in 2007. Their shared passion for ambient music, tape loops, and drone laid the foundation for their artistic partnership.
"Friendship Survival Guide" will be accompanied by a three-part short film by director Jonas Govaerts, filmed in Ghent and Muizen, Belgium. The release also heralds performances celebrating Jóhannsson's musical achievements, including an orchestral program at the Vancouver International Film Festival in October.
