Jesse Tyler Ferguson, known for his role in 'Modern Family,' will star as Truman Capote in the first New York revival of 'Tru.' This solo play by Jay Presson Allen, originally a triumph for Robert Morse, will run for a strictly limited six-week engagement from March 6 to April 12, opening on March 19. The intimate venue, House of the Redeemer, seats fewer than 100 people.
The production is set in December 1975, capturing Capote after the scandalous publication of 'Answered Prayers.' The play draws entirely from the author's own words, exploring his isolation after the literary elite turned against him. Ferguson expressed his honor in portraying Capote, envisioning an intimate, environmental experience for the audience.
Director Rob Ashford was inspired to bring 'Tru' to life after witnessing Ferguson's mesmerizing performance in a staged reading in Morocco. Producers highlighted the heartbreaking power of Ferguson's portrayal and the immersive staging within the historic Gilded Age library setting. The House of the Redeemer itself has historical ties, having been the residence of Edith Shepard Fabbri, a Vanderbilt descendant.
