25 Sep
Summary
- Star claims ignorance of his cosmetics appearing at Dollar Tree.
- He sold excess inventory to a liquidator for repackaging and sale.
- Social media users criticized the move, linking it to business struggles.
Jeffree Star has defended his eponymous cosmetics brand's presence in Dollar Tree stores, a move that has sparked controversy. Star, known for his abrasive personality and past controversies, addressed the situation in a video posted on Wednesday, September 23rd, which garnered over 3 million views. He stated he had no prior knowledge of his single eyeshadow palettes being sold at the discount chain, initially dismissing images as AI-generated due to unfamiliar packaging.
Star explained that he sold approximately two million units of excess single eyeshadow palettes, which were no longer selling well, to a liquidator a couple of years ago. He believed the liquidator intended to sell the products overseas. However, unbeknownst to him, the liquidator entered into an agreement with Dollar Tree and repackaged the items for sale.
This situation drew criticism as it contrasted with Star's previous mockery of fellow beauty brands, like Kat Von D's, for appearing in stores such as TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Some social media commentators interpreted the Dollar Tree deal as a sign of business struggles, with one top comment suggesting that engaging a liquidator typically indicates a brand is in difficulty.
Conversely, some supporters viewed the move as a smart business decision, potentially boosting brand visibility and making products accessible to a wider audience who might not have previously tried Jeffree Star Cosmetics. They argued that it was better than the products potentially being discarded.
