DJ Khaled expressed his excitement about bringing the two legendary artists together, noting he observed them having great conversations at a dinner, which inspired him to pursue the collaboration. He took four to five years to gather the courage to ask them, but their willingness was confirmed that night.

Jay-Z acknowledged that competing with Nas likely sharpened both their skills. He suggested that the rivalry may have motivated Nas, especially during periods when he was less consistently releasing music. For Jay-Z, the competition kept him focused during his highly successful "Blueprint, Vol. 2" era.
