Javed Siddiqui Slams OTT Profanity, Lauds Lucknow

Veteran Hindi screenplay writer Javed Siddiqui, known for his work on classics like 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' and 'Baazigar,' has expressed concern over the increasing use of profane language in contemporary cinema and streaming content.

Siddiqui, who was recently honored in Lucknow, emphasized the moral responsibility of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms. He noted that the normalization of coarse language, often adopted from Western media without cultural understanding, is detrimental. He believes that writers' associations should collectively address this issue, highlighting that such language, when adopted by children, would be unacceptable to parents.

With a creative bond to Lucknow, evident in films like 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' and 'Umrao Jaan,' Siddiqui finds the city retains a unique cultural fragrance and significant literary contribution. He also praised Lucknow's irresistible culinary delights, particularly its galouti kebabs.

Reflecting on the state of Indian theatre, Siddiqui pointed out the shortage of good plays and playwrights, alongside financial challenges like inflation and a lack of proper theatre halls. To address rising production costs, he has focused on writing smaller productions with fewer characters to ensure theatrical sustainability.
