25 Oct
Summary
- Rapid progress may be reducing cultural depth and vocabulary.
- Literature fosters empathy by helping readers understand diverse experiences.
- Artistic freedom, including on political topics, is crucial for society.
Javed Akhtar, a renowned poet and lyricist, recently warned that society's rapid progress is being achieved at the expense of cultural depth and vitality. Speaking at the Symbiosis Literary Festival 2026 in Pune, Akhtar likened societal development to a tree growing taller without strengthening its roots, emphasizing the danger of gaining speed over depth.
He also voiced concerns over the shrinking vocabulary of younger generations, noting that a limited command of language impedes clear articulation. Akhtar underscored the vital role of literature in cultivating empathy, enabling readers to grasp diverse experiences and recognize shared human values. He advocated for unrestricted artistic expression, even on political matters, stating that censorship of poems and books is unhealthy.
The festival, themed 'Where Stories Gather,' also highlighted the importance of bridging the divide between science and humanities in education. Symbiosis founder Prof S B Mujumdar noted that education remains incomplete without the humanities, despite advancements in science and technology. Akhtar concurred, criticizing governments for neglecting education and praising institutions that work to improve it.
