Javed Akhtar's Songwriting Fear: Terror Inspired Hit

Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar shared insights into the creation of the enduring song 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga,' revealing that terror was its primary inspiration. Initially, filmmakers Vidhu Vinod Chopra and RD Burman questioned the need for a song in the 1994 film '1942: A Love Story.' Akhtar was challenged to write an exceptional piece without a given tune or situation, facing a daunting deadline.

Under immense pressure and fearing embarrassment, Akhtar conceived the idea of building the song around similes while driving. This creative burst, fueled by anxiety, led to the lyrics being rapidly set to music by RD Burman. Akhtar believes the song's success, alongside the film, marked a turning point for Hindi film music, reducing vulgarity and promoting poetic expression, a welcome change from what he described as the 'lowest common denominator.'

Akhtar highlighted the rarity of opportunities for such poetic songwriting, crediting Chopra's unconventional demand for genuine poetry. He also reflected on the film industry's often harsh judgment based on box-office success, noting how composers like RD Burman, who faced setbacks, found a renewed chance with this project.
