Jason Clarke Reflects on Intense Physical Toll of Murdaugh Role
29 Oct
Summary
- Gained 40 pounds for the role
- Wore a wig and red eyebrows for 6 months
- Kept to himself to conserve energy for the demanding part

In October 2025, actor Jason Clarke, 56, reflected on the intense physical toll of his latest role as convicted killer Alex Murdaugh in the Hulu miniseries "Murdaugh: Death in the Family." Clarke revealed that he gained roughly 40 pounds for the part and wore a wig and red eyebrows for 6 months of filming, which he described as "very long days."
The actor said he "kept to myself" during production, conserving his energy to portray the "loud," "boisterous" Murdaugh. Clarke felt a "weight" lift when he removed the suit after filming, and would get leg massages to decompress from the physical demands of the role.
Co-star Patricia Arquette, who played Murdaugh's slain wife Maggie, praised Clarke's transformation, saying he "immediately" fit the part and had the "charm and funny thing" to capture Murdaugh's essence. The miniseries is based on the real-life story of Murdaugh, who was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021.
