Jason Aldean's new single, "Don't Tell on Me," showcases a significant shift towards a harder rock sound, reminiscent of '90s rock bands. This departure from his recent work blends country sensibilities with influences like Foo Fighters and Soundgarden. The song was a collaborative effort, primarily penned by Aldean and his long-standing band members, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Allison, who have been instrumental in his career for nearly three decades.
Kennedy and Allison, along with co-writers John Morgan and Lydia Vaughan, crafted "Don't Tell on Me" with Aldean's voice and performance style in mind. The writing process involved Kennedy bringing the title and concept of a heart personifying deception, while Allison developed the musical direction, starting with distinctive guitar riffs. The track was recorded in Nashville at Treasure Isle studio, with producer Michael Knox aiming for an authentic, rock-driven sound.
"Don't Tell on Me" was released on February 26, following its predecessor "How Far Does a Goodbye Go" reaching number one on the Country Airplay chart. Aldean expressed his intention to create a single that was aggressive and attention-grabbing. The song's production incorporated elements like a Leslie amp for a haunting guitar effect, mirroring '90s rock aesthetics. Aldean plans to debut the song live on April 10 in New Orleans.
