10 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Japan enhances film incentive program for international projects.
- New subsidies will offer multi-year support and flexible expense reporting.
- The updated scheme is slated for a late spring 2026 launch.

Japan is set to bolster its support for international visual productions with an enhanced incentive program scheduled for a late spring 2026 debut. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), through its operator VIPO and coordinator Japan Film Commission, will introduce multi-year subsidies.
This update brings greater flexibility, particularly in expense reporting. Previously, productions had to align costs within a single Japanese fiscal year. The revised system will allow expenses to span up to two years, offering productions more operational freedom and financial planning ease.
