Singer Jane McDonald candidly discussed her first marriage in her memoir, "Let the Light In," revealing it was a union that "should never have happened." Married at 21, McDonald acknowledged she was likely on the rebound from a previous relationship when she wed Paul, a drummer she met through his band.
She described falling deeply in love and even leaving her job at Casanova's to be home for him in the evenings. However, she soon realized she had sacrificed her own dreams, taking a call centre job for two years. The couple had a traditional wedding, after which Paul discovered her singing talent when she performed at their reception.
McDonald eventually admitted to herself and Paul after six months of marriage that she desired a different life and that he deserved better. She confessed to still feeling "guilty" about hurting him when the marriage ended suddenly, emphasizing that while difficult, sometimes admitting a mistake and walking away is the kindest action.
Her later significant relationship was with former Searchers drummer Eddie Rothe, whom she had a history with from the 1980s. They reconnected in 2008 but never married. Rothe sadly passed away from lung cancer in 2021, a loss McDonald described as a "shock" that required her to rebuild her life, finding solace in her career and fans.
