ITV's new drama, 'The Lady,' explores the complex life of Jane Andrews, a former dresser to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Andrews, originally from a working-class background in Grimsby, secured a position at Buckingham Palace and developed a close relationship with the Duchess.
During her nine years of service, it was alleged that Andrews became deeply influenced by Ferguson, mimicking her style and accent. The friendship reportedly intensified following the breakdown of Sarah Ferguson's marriage. However, Andrews eventually lost her job due to financial cutbacks at the palace.
Following her redundancy, Andrews began a relationship with businessman Thomas Cressman. In September 2000, Cressman was found murdered in their shared flat; Andrews was convicted of his killing in 2001, claiming abuse in their relationship. She was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Andrews made headlines again in 2009 when she escaped from prison, only to be recaptured two days later. She was finally released in 2019 and is said to be working for an animal hospital.
