Jana Nayagan, the much-anticipated swan song from actor Vijay before his full-time political career, is set to release on July 23, 2026. The H. Vinoth-directed political action drama has navigated a challenging path since its initial planned release on January 9, 2026. Delays in certification and legal disputes marked the early part of the year.

The film faced an unexpected setback when objections were raised just days before its intended January 9, 2026 release, leading to a referral to a revision committee. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) subsequently informed the Madras High Court of further reviews. This prolonged uncertainty impacted international release plans, with advance bookings exceeding Rs 1 crore being put on hold.

Adding to the film's troubles, Jana Nayagan was leaked online on April 9, 2026. Investigations by the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing and the Madras High Court led to arrests of individuals involved in piracy. Reports indicated that approximately 12 million people had viewed the pirated version before official certification.

Following his victory in the May 10, 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister. While this real-life transition mirrored his on-screen persona as a leader, it did not immediately smooth the film's path to theaters. The CBFC finally granted an 'A' certificate on July 9, 2026, after requiring 12 modifications and 20 seconds of deletions or replacements, maintaining the film's 183-minute runtime.
