Van Der Beek's $269K Tax Debt Before Cancer Battle
16 Feb
Summary
- Van Der Beek and wife owed $269,328 in back taxes.
- The IRS lien was released after the debt was paid.
- He recently purchased a Texas home with friends' help.

Prior to his battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, actor James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, were burdened by a substantial tax debt. In November 2021, the IRS placed a lien on the couple for $269,328.62 in unpaid taxes from 2017, 2018, and 2019. This financial obligation was resolved, with the lien being officially released in April 2022.
This tax issue surfaced before Van Der Beek publicly shared his cancer diagnosis in 2024. He had expressed optimism despite the news of his stage 3 colorectal cancer. Weeks before his passing on February 11, 2026, the family finalized the purchase of a $4 million home in Texas, a property they had been renting.
Van Der Beek's family reported that friends contributed to the down payment for the Texas residence. Following the actor's death, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Kimberly and their children with expenses. As of Monday, this fund has garnered over $2 million.
