James Ortiz: From Puppets to Project Hail Mary Stardom

James Ortiz, a multifaceted artist known for acting, design, performance, playwriting, and directing, has officially signed with Artists First for management representation. This move follows his recent significant role in the blockbuster sci-fi film 'Project Hail Mary'.

In the Amazon MGM Studios hit, an adaptation of Andy Weir's novel, Ortiz co-lead as Rocky, the alien companion to Ryan Gosling's character. The film achieved considerable box office success, earning over $683 million worldwide and is now available for streaming.

Ortiz's artistic contributions extend beyond film into the realm of theatre. He received a 2022 Drama Desk Award for his notable dinosaur puppet designs for Lincoln Center's 'The Skin of Our Teeth'. His performance as Milky White in the 2022 Broadway revival of 'Into the Woods' also garnered significant fan appreciation.

His creative prowess was further highlighted by his Off-Broadway creation, 'The Woodsman', which earned him a 2016 Obie Award for puppet design. Ortiz's artistic journey also includes recognition as a 2017 Eugene O'Neill residency recipient and a two-time Jim Henson Foundation grant awardee.

As a co-founder and co-artistic director of the devised theatre group Strangemen & Co., Ortiz continues to develop innovative works that blend theatricality, movement theatre, and puppetry. He also maintains representation with CAA and Viewpoint.
