Musician James Mercer, best known as the founder of The Shins, is set to publish his first children's book, titled 'Book of Dreams.' This rhyming picture book, slated for release on March 2, 2027, was inspired by Mercer's own conversations with his daughters.
The book aims to capture the "magical and mysterious worlds" that children experience in their dreams. Mercer explained that the stories grew out of discussions about dreams, seeking to create a narrative that helps children comprehend their emotions and inner lives. The project also includes a lullaby written by Mercer, adding a musical dimension.
Illustrations for 'Book of Dreams' are by Jacob Escobedo, known for his work with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, and previous collaborations with Mercer on album artwork. The book addresses various types of dreams, including those that are frightening, aiming to empower young readers. Editor Maria Correa highlighted the book's focus on imagination and emotional development.
In addition to his literary debut, The Shins will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2026 with a special vinyl release. The band is also scheduled to tour with Weezer in the upcoming fall season. 'Book of Dreams' is currently available for preorder.
