In a recent interview, former 'Family Matters' star Jaleel White shared some surprising insights about his iconic character Steve Urkel and the character's alter ego, Stefan Urquelle. According to White, he personally felt that the Urquelle persona was "boring" and a "one-note joke", despite the character's popularity with viewers.
White explained that he was "really taken aback" when audiences fell in love with Urquelle, Urkel's suave and confident alter ego. The actor, who is also a 'Dancing With the Stars' alum, said he was "always comfortable in [his] skin" and didn't see the need for the Urquelle character. However, he acknowledged that Urquelle was an effective storytelling device to keep viewers engaged with the show.
In his recent memoir 'Growing Up Urkel', White delved deeper into the dynamics of Urkel's alternate personalities. The sitcom star revealed that he was personally worried about getting teased at school for portraying Urkel's other alter ego, Myrtle Urkel. Despite his reservations, White eventually reprised the Myrtle character a few more times on the show.
