Jake Wood, known for his role in EastEnders, has created a new art exhibition titled 'Icon Series,' set to open in Brighton next month. The collection features a prominent portrait of the late Dame Barbara Windsor, who played the iconic Peggy Mitchell. Wood, who was a close friend of Windsor, aimed to depict her 'absolute joy and her light' in the artwork, drawing inspiration from a photograph of her receiving her Damehood in 2016.
The exhibition carries a significant charitable component, dedicating 10% of all proceeds to Dementia UK. This cause is deeply personal to Wood, who witnessed Windsor's courageous battle with dementia. Her husband, Scott Mitchell, a vocal advocate for dementia awareness, is expected to attend the exhibition's private viewing on May 7. Wood has previously supported dementia research, running the 2019 London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution.
Wood's exhibition includes 15 multimedia pieces inspired by culturally iconic figures he has known or admired, such as David Attenborough, Sinead O'Connor, and Nelson Mandela. While famed for his acting, Wood has a long-standing passion for art, which he began pursuing more seriously during the pandemic. He recalls art as his favorite subject in school and even created a mural at his secondary school.
