Summary

- His mother cited his mental health struggles, not film backlash.
- He is currently undergoing an 18-month inpatient program.

Jake Lloyd, known globally for his role as young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, retired from acting in 2001. For years, it was widely believed that harsh criticism of his performance and subsequent bullying at school prompted his departure from Hollywood.
However, Lloyd's mother, Lisa, recently shared a different perspective in 2024. She stated that her son was largely shielded from film backlash and that her separation from his father was a significant factor in his decision to step away from acting.
During his high school years, Lloyd began experiencing mental health challenges, initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Later, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, a condition his mother believed to be hereditary.
His struggles with the law began in 2015 with an incident involving his mother. He was subsequently arrested in South Carolina in June 2015 for charges including resisting arrest and reckless driving.
After serving nearly ten months, Lloyd was transferred to a mental health facility in April 2016. His condition reportedly worsened after the death of his sister, Madison, in 2018. A psychotic break in March 2023 led to a second arrest after he stopped his car on a freeway.
Following his second arrest, Lloyd entered an inpatient rehabilitation program. As of 2024, he was ten months into an 18-month program, with his mother reporting substantial improvement in his condition and social engagement.
