The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is proud to present the U.K. premiere of the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit, "Jaja's African Hair Braiding." This celebrated comedy will run from March 18 through April 25.
The play transports audiences to a lively Harlem braiding salon, depicting a single summer day filled with the stories of West African immigrant braiders. They interact with neighborhood clients, managing demanding personalities, hidden secrets, and personal ambitions within their new home.
This production marks a reunion for writer Jocelyn Bioh and director Monique Touko, who previously collaborated on the 2023 success "School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play." The ensemble cast includes Bola Akeju, Zainab Jah, and Renee Bailey in leading roles, supported by babirye bukilwa, Demmy Ladipo, and others.
"Jaja's African Hair Braiding" captivated Broadway audiences, earning two Tony Awards and multiple other accolades. Bioh expressed her joy at bringing the play to London, emphasizing themes of love and community, while Touko highlighted the vibrancy and soul within Bioh's storytelling. The creative team also features notable designers for set, costumes, and lighting.
