As the Navratras festival kicks off in Jaipur, one timeless tradition continues to shine bright against the glare of digital screens: the Ramleela. Despite the growing popularity of OTT platforms, video games, and social media, these open-air theatrical performances of the Ramayana have remained a cultural cornerstone in the city, drawing packed audiences night after night.
Across various city grounds, from the historic Ramleela Maidan near New Gate to neighborhood stages in Adarsh Nagar, thousands gather to witness the age-old tale of Lord Rama's journey, sacrifice, and triumph over evil. At the Ramleela Maidan, Praveen Sharma, fondly known as Praveen Bade Bhaiya, oversees one of the city's oldest Ramleela productions, which has been running since the pre-Independence era. "People come not just for entertainment but to reconnect with their roots," he says.
Meanwhile, in Adarsh Nagar, another Ramleela production is making waves not only for its captivating storytelling but also for its progressive casting. It is one of the few Ramleelas in Jaipur where women portray female roles, a rarity in traditional productions. "We innovate every year to attract a loyal audience," says Anil Khurana, the secretary of the Adarsh Nagar Ramleela committee.
