Woodson's Stories Come Alive in New Animated Special

Jacqueline Woodson's acclaimed book "The Day You Begin" has been transformed into an animated television special, premiering Friday on PBS Kids. The program centers on four young characters experiencing their first day of kindergarten, including Angelina, a young Woodson, and Rigoberto, a new immigrant from Venezuela.

The special aims to counteract efforts to erase diverse stories, as highlighted by Woodson, who noted the current climate of book bans and the exclusion of civil rights topics from schools. She believes "The Day You Begin" is both timely and timeless, reinforcing that children's diverse backgrounds enrich their communities.

Woodson, an executive producer and co-writer, ensured the adaptation honored the book's spirit and the illustrator Rafael López's work. Notable changes include depicting the children's families more fully and showcasing the vibrant Brooklyn setting, a departure from the book's more interior focus.

The series, initially conceived as a full-length show, explores themes of feeling like an outsider and discovering inner strength. Woodson hopes young viewers will be inspired to embrace their passions and connect with others, celebrating their individual stories.
