Italy Selects 'The Spiral' for Oscars Race

Italy has officially put forward Paolo Strippoli's "The Spiral" (L'Estranea) as its contender for the Best International Feature Film at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards. This drama, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, features Jasmine Trinca in the lead role.
Trinca portrays a woman who arrives at her daughter's home during a storm to reveal a deeply held secret that threatens to unravel their family and relationship. The film's cast also includes Romana Maggiora Vergano, Adriano Giannini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.
The selection committee, overseen by the Italian cinema guild Anica, praised "The Spiral" for being a "new genre film" by a "young director" who has recently embarked on his career. They noted its positive reception from both audiences and national and international critics.
Italy's last win in this category was in 2014 with Paolo Sorrentino's "The Great Beauty." "The Spiral" was chosen from a shortlist of 21 potential submissions, including other notable Venice Film Festival titles.
