The Bhartendu Natuna Akademi recently staged 'Island of Dreams,' a compelling adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.' Presented by the academy's second-year students, the play captivated audiences with its blend of magic, romance, and mischief.
Directed by Shubhodeep Raha, the production emphasized illusion and theatrical magic to mirror the play's narrative. Director Raha noted the incorporation of various magic tricks, such as characters appearing from chairs and vanishing from boxes, alongside dynamic dance sequences. The play's score featured a fusion of Indo-Western music, composed by Bhaskar Jyoti Konwar, adding another layer to the enchanting atmosphere.
The narrative unfolds on a dreamlike island, commencing with Oberon, a magician, and his fairies. Dissatisfied with predictable magic, they conjure a realm governed by human impulses, leading to collisions between lovers and rulers. As the play concludes, the magic dissolves, revealing the fairies observing the raw reality of human behavior and relationships in the human world.
