In the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City, a peculiar island known as La Isla de las Muñecas hosts thousands of dolls. These weathered figures, with cracked faces and missing limbs, hang from trees, creating an unsettling landscape.
The island's origins trace back to Don Julián Santana Barrera, who began living there in the 1950s. He recounted finding the body of a young girl who had drowned in a nearby canal, followed by discovering a doll floating nearby. Believing the girl's spirit lingered, he started hanging the doll to bring it peace.
Over the decades, Don Julián amassed more dolls by searching dumpsters and trading, turning the island into an eerie shrine. He passed away on the island in 2001. Since then, visitors have continued the tradition, adding their own dolls, contributing to its status as the world's largest haunted doll collection.
