Cancer Diagnosis Inspires Director's Graceful Goodbye

Spanish director Isabel Coixet, initially reluctant to tackle cancer narratives after "My Life Without Me," was drawn to adapt Michela Murgia's bestseller "Three Bowls." The novel, a semi-autobiographical account of a kidney cancer diagnosis, resonated with Coixet for its portrayal of grace amidst sorrow and joy within grief.

"Three Goodbyes," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Alba Rohrwacher as Marta and Elio Germano as Antonio. The film follows Marta's response to a breakup and a subsequent health crisis, exploring themes of human legacy and connection.

Coixet was particularly eager to work with Rohrwacher, admiring her on-screen presence. Rohrwacher, a fan of Murgia's work, was also drawn to Coixet's unique perspective and the script's emotional depth.

The film incorporates elements like a K-Pop idol cutout, representing Marta's isolation, and the symbolic importance of food, reflecting personal habits and emotional states. Coixet's personal love for ice cream even made its way into a poignant scene.

Shot in Rome, the film captures the city's textures and vibrant neighborhoods, with Rohrwacher contributing the idea of omnipresent Madonnas. The natural chemistry between Rohrwacher and Germano allowed them to delve deeply into their characters, transcending the script.
