Nearly 25 years after its creation, a short film titled 'The Last Tenant,' featuring Irrfan and Vidya Balan, has been released on YouTube. Director Sarthak Dasgupta shared this rediscovered work on what would have been Irrfan's sixth death anniversary. The film had been lost due to damaged and missing tapes, remaining unreleased for decades.
Dasgupta, who had no formal filmmaking training at the time, considered the film lost and its disappearance disheartening. The project resurfaced unexpectedly when an old VHS tape was found just before disposal. This discovery led to the decision to release the film as a tribute to Irrfan.
The director was surprised by the overwhelmingly positive audience response, describing the experience as cathartic. He recalled Irrfan's immediate connection to the story and his supportive collaboration during the shoot, which gave Dasgupta confidence in his directorial abilities. Vidya Balan also provided significant support.
Dasgupta has since directed other projects and is currently developing new films. 'The Last Tenant' is now available on YouTube, appreciated by audiences who were previously unaware of its existence.
