Archaeologists in Norfolk have discovered an "extraordinary" bronze trumpet, or carnyx, believed to date from the first century AD. This artifact is the most complete example of its kind ever found globally and is only the third carnyx discovered in Britain.
The carnyx was found in west Norfolk during excavations for a housing development, alongside a collection of military objects. These include a unique bronze boar's head battle standard and five shield bosses, all potentially buried by the Iceni tribe, the very group that revolted against the Romans under Boudicca in AD 60.
Experts describe the find as a "once-in-a-career" discovery, emphasizing its potential connection to Boudicca and the Iceni. Conservation work is ongoing, but the carnyx's remarkable condition, including intact animal ears and signs of repair, suggests it was a significant and long-used object, offering new insights into Iron Age sound and warfare.
