Iris Murdoch: Unseen Art Emerges in New Exhibition

A major exhibition at the University of Chichester is bringing attention to the visual art of Dame Iris Murdoch, a figure widely celebrated for her novels and philosophical writings. The retrospective features a substantial number of artworks by Murdoch, with nearly all of them being displayed publicly for the very first time, and some pieces only recently discovered. These artworks are presented alongside personal effects and correspondence, offering insights into the development of her artistic practice in relation to her life and literary output.

Organized by The Otter Collective, the exhibition is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Iris Murdoch Research Centre. It offers a unique opportunity to explore a lesser-known dimension of Murdoch's creative life. Dr. Miles Leeson, Director of the Iris Murdoch Research Centre, highlighted that the retrospective provides fresh perspectives on the interplay of art, philosophy, and literature that influenced Murdoch's thought. The event aims to give greater public recognition to her achievements as a visual artist.

The exhibition extends beyond Murdoch's own creations, including works by other British artists connected to or inspired by her, such as Margaret Benyon and Tom Phillips. These are displayed alongside contemporary pieces influenced by her work. This curated collection emphasizes Murdoch's lasting impact on culture and encourages a deeper appreciation of her visual artistry. The exhibition is open to the public free of charge from August 14 to December 10, 2026.
