- The tent's growth mirrors Iowa's craft brewery increase.

The Iowa State Fair's Craft Beer Tent evolved from a simple idea into a major attraction, significantly impacting Iowa's drinking culture and craft beer industry. Launched in 2011 with 36 taps, the tent has expanded over the years to feature 257 Iowa craft beverages from 119 taps, with offerings changing daily. This expansion culminated in a larger, custom-built space by August 2021, tripling the previous footprint.
Scott Carlson, the visionary behind the tent, pursued his ambition for 14 years before securing a spot. The Blue Ribbon Foundation approached him in 2011 when a special event tent needed activation, leading to the tent's debut. Initially, the tent showcased just over a dozen breweries, including some from out of state.
The tent successfully challenged perceptions of fair beer, promoting craft beer as a mainstream option and exposing thousands to smaller producers. This visibility boosted Iowa's craft beer scene, contributing to the rise from 27 breweries in 2011 to approximately 150 by 2026, fostering a sense of local brewing identity and economic impact.
