Vampire Film's 4K Resurgence: Director Reveals Secrets

Neil Jordan's seminal gothic vampire film, "Interview with the Vampire," originally released 32 years ago, has been remastered and is now available in 4K resolution. This restoration allows the film to be presented as originally envisioned, with director Neil Jordan expressing satisfaction that the movie can be brought back to life visually.

The 4K release includes bonus features such as deleted scenes, with Jordan discussing a particularly dramatic church scene involving Louis that was omitted from the final cut. He speculates its removal might have been due to length or an overemphasis on Louis's suffering.

Jordan attributes the film's lasting appeal to Anne Rice's groundbreaking reimagining of the vampire myth. She shifted the focus from traditional horror to the philosophical implications of eternal life and companionship, significantly influencing subsequent vampire literature, including the "Twilight" series.

The director viewed the film as a story about a "doomed family" and the complex relationship between two vampires and their created child, Claudia. He noted the challenge of making a horror film from the perspective of immortal beings, where terror arises from internal dread and existential themes rather than jump scares.

A particularly challenging scene to film involved a prostitute's realization she was with vampires, requiring eight days to shoot. Jordan also reflected on the practical effects used, such as building and burning a New Orleans set, noting it was a time before CGI dominated filmmaking. He also discussed the possibility of shooting in IMAX, expressing a preference for traditional 35mm filmmaking.
