Interpol's New Sound: Berlin Dad & Barcelona Guitarist

Interpol's eighth studio album, "This Mirror Weighs a Ton," arrives as a testament to their enduring presence in rock music. Producer Andrew Wyatt and longtime touring bassist Brad Truax join the band for this new release, which frontman Paul Banks describes as an "unexpected alchemy." While no longer full-time New York residents, with Banks in Berlin and Kessler in Barcelona, the band finds a revitalizing energy in returning to the city.

The album's creative process began with jamming sessions in Wyatt's West Village studio in the spring of 2024. Wyatt, known for his work with Miike Snow and hitmakers like Lady Gaga, offered a fresh perspective. Truax's integration into the studio process after a decade as a live member marked a significant shift, allowing Banks to return to his primary roles of singing and guitar. Sessions also took place at Gonzo's on St. Mark's Place, a venue resonant with the band's history, and later in Wyatt's unconventional Chinatown studio in January 2025.

Banks spent the remainder of 2025 in Berlin writing lyrics, balancing his creative output with fatherhood to his two young children. He reflects that parenthood has deepened his creative drive and sense of fulfillment. The band is preparing for a fall tour across North America and Europe, set to feature a refined setlist including new material from "This Mirror Weighs a Ton."
