French Grant Fuels Indo-French Animated Fantasy 'Heirloom'

The animated feature "Heirloom," a collaboration between India and France, has officially formalized its French co-production with Paris-based Condor Films. The project also received the prestigious Aide aux Cinémas du Monde grant from the CNC, underscoring its creative and financial viability. This marks the debut feature for director Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, previously recognized for his short film "Wade."

Set in Ahmedabad in 1960, "Heirloom" delves into the story of a young businessman committed to handloom traditions and his wife, who faces a hereditary illness. Their conflict intensifies upon discovering a family tapestry, forcing a confrontation between preserving the past and embracing future progress. The film's distinctive visual style is achieved through a unique blend of raw, hand-drawn 2D animation and intricate stop-motion embroidery.

Produced by Odd & Even and Otter Studios, alongside Condor Films and India's National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), "Heirloom" has been in development for six years. Condor Films, the production arm of Condor Distribution, acts as the French creative and financial partner. The project's extensive development included participation in the Annecy Residency, MIFA Pitches, Cannes Film Festival showcases, and the Venice Gap-Financing Market, receiving accolades like the WIP Award at HAF 2024.
