Nolan's IMAX Reality: India's Screens Fall Short

Christopher Nolan's recent visit to India for the promotion of "The Odyssey" has reignited a debate concerning the true meaning of IMAX in the country. The core issue revolves around the significant discrepancy between the quality of India's commercial cinema screens and the authentic IMAX format for which Nolan's films are crafted.

While IMAX is marketed as a superior cinematic experience, with tickets often costing between Rs 400 to over Rs 3,400, the reality is that India's approximately 30 IMAX-branded screens utilize a smaller 1.90:1 aspect ratio, dubbed 'LieMAX.' This contrasts sharply with the true IMAX format (1.43:1) that Nolan and other filmmakers utilize, which offers a significantly more immersive visual field.

This disparity stems from a lack of true IMAX auditoriums, which require specialized construction and projection systems. India's only genuine IMAX screen, at Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad, is primarily for documentaries. Past attempts at true IMAX in India, like Prasad's Multiplex in Hyderabad, ceased operations due to sustainability issues.

Consequently, while Indian IMAX provides a larger screen and better sound than standard theaters, it falls short of the full visual immersion intended by filmmakers like Nolan. The experience is akin to viewing content through a 'window' rather than the 'full wall' of a true IMAX setup.
