AI in Screenwriting: Threat or Tool?
14 Feb
Summary
- AI tools used by 41% of Indian screenwriters, half see no career threat.
- Nearly 70% believe AI reduces perceived value of human creativity.
- 74% of writers feel unfairly paid, up from 63% three years ago.

A new report reveals that artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into the work of Indian screenwriters. The study indicates that 41% of professionals utilize AI tools at least sometimes, with half feeling AI does not pose a career threat. Despite this adoption, nearly seven in ten writers believe AI diminishes the perceived value of human creativity among producers.
Persistent issues of fair compensation and credit remain prominent. The report highlights that 74% of screenwriters feel underpaid, a rise from 63% previously. Furthermore, over half experience delayed payments, and almost 80% frequently chase overdue contractual payments. Profit-sharing and performance-linked bonuses are rare, with two-thirds never having been offered such incentives.
Credit and recognition also present substantial hurdles, with more than half of screenwriters disagreeing that they receive fair credit. A lack of consistent industry standards for crediting is noted, particularly when co-writing with directors or senior writers. Theatrical cinema is perceived as the format where scripts hold the least influence, with only 6% believing producers value scripts over stars.
Access to mentorship and support structures has declined. Just 19% report having good mentors, down from 30% in 2023. The industry is seen as lacking adequate infrastructure for writer development, with fewer than 40% having access to effective grievance-redressal mechanisms. The report emphasizes the need for stronger alignment and accountability within the industry.
